First off, what is Lamu and why is it so special?

Lamu is a charming island off the coast of Kenya, where long-standing customs and pristine scenery come together to make an outstanding vacation spot. In the middle of breathtaking natural scenery, Lamu is a place where time appears to have stopped. There, the rich Swahili cultural history is preserved.

This East African treasure is for anyone looking for an authentic and immersive Swahili experience with its immaculate beaches, majestic architecture, and gracious hospitality.

I’ve outlined below some of the best things to do on the island, so let’s dive right in, shall we?

1. Take a stroll through Lamu Old Town

With centuries of history, Lamu Town has seen many changes, and its peculiar fusion of African, Arab, and Indian elements has molded its distinct personality. The town, which was established in the 14th century, has a fascinating history as a significant trading hub along the Indian Ocean trade routes. You’ll be amazed by the gorgeous Swahili architecture that is ornamented with elaborate wooden doors, graceful arches, and delicate balconies, exhibiting the town’s architectural splendor, as you stroll through Lamu Old Town.

Since 2001, Lamu Old Town has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This distinction recognizes its exceptional cultural importance and the necessity to safeguard its distinctive architecture and traditions for upcoming generations. The carved wooden doors, graceful archways, and beautiful balconies are examples of the town’s intriguing fusion of African, Arab, and Indian influences. Being surrounded by the town’s timeless beauty while strolling through Lamu’s winding streets gives the impression of traveling back in time.

Furthermore, one of the most distinctive features of Lamu Town is its lack of motorized vehicles. The absence of cars and motorcycles contributes to a peaceful, laid-back atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for relaxation and a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life.

2. Visit Lamu Museum to learn about the island’s history and culture

7. Discover the 14th-century Swahili ruins on nearby islands, like Takwa Ruins on Manda Island

The 14th-century Swahili ruins on Lamu Island offer a fascinating glimpse into the island’s storied past.

These ancient ruins, dating back to the 14th century, are a testament to Lamu’s historical significance as a thriving trading center along the East African coast. As you explore the remnants of these once-thriving settlements, you’ll be transported to an era of bustling commerce and cultural exchange.

The ruins, often found on neighboring islands like Manda, Pate, and Siyu, showcase the architectural prowess of the Swahili people with their distinctive coral stone structures and intricately carved designs.

Strolling through the time-worn walls, you’ll feel a sense of awe at the resilience of these ancient communities and the enduring legacy they left behind. These Swahili ruins are not just remnants of a bygone era, but they are also a window into the island’s cultural heritage, connecting visitors to the vibrant history that shaped Lamu and the surrounding region.

So after putting together this comprehensive guide, is Lamu actually worth it?

Personally, I’d say yes!

What’s great about Kenya is that you can visit different coastal destinations for different purposes. If you’d like a vibrant atmosphere with a good selection of bars and nightlife options, I’d recommend going to Diani Beach or Mombasa.

If you are more into kitesurfing, scuba diving, and a more quiet and intimate environment, Watamu is the place for you!

Lastly, if you just want to be in complete zen mode, have lots of options to do yoga, or want to be away from cars and watch the sunset on a cozy dhow ride, then Lamu is the place to be. So to sum up, if you haven’t yet experienced the magic of Lamu, then make sure to see the island before you leave.

When it comes to breathtaking landscapes and thrilling water sports, Kenya may not be the first destination that comes to mind. However, our East African gem is home to some of the most fantastic kitesurfing spots, where the wind, waves, and warm waters conspire to create a kitesurfer’s paradise. From pristine beaches to vibrant marine life, Kenya offers a unique kitesurfing experience that combines adventure, nature, and culture. In this blog post, we’ll explore the best kitesurfing spots in Kenya and what makes each location a must-visit for water sports enthusiasts.

When is the best time to go kitesurfing in Kenya?

Tropical and mild temperatures prevail year-round along Kenya’s coastline. The water is usually 26 degrees, while the air is generally around 30 degrees. This enables a holiday that includes water sports without wearing a wetsuit, however, I’d advise bringing long lycras and a lot of sunscreen to protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun.

In Kenya, there are two distinct wind seasons:

Kaskazi – from mid-December to mid-March

Kuzi – from June to mid-September

With an average wind speed of 17 knots, the Kaskazi wind is quite dependable and consistent. Typically, the wind blows from late morning in the morning until 7 in the evening.

In Kenya, we usually refer to the Kuzi season as our “winter” because it is the cooler season. With an average wind speed of 18 to 22 knots, the wind is generally stronger but less steady. The passage of tropical rainstorms makes it more challenging to forecast the wind and weather.

Naturally, there are windy days outside of the wind seasons as well. You’re likely to see some windy days all year round, particularly between the months of April and October. However, it’s really difficult to foresee these, so you’ll need a little luck. The lowest wind guarantee of the year is in November! The wind is simply a mild breeze of 4 to 8 mph and is entirely onshore. In general, the ocean is tranquil and welcoming for SUP, kayaking, and diving.

Things to note: The spring tides, which occur on full and new moons, are when the tide variations are the greatest. Galu Beach has the significant advantage of always having adequate water to kite as opposed to central Diani Beach.

Sea urchins are naturally present on the ocean floor because the Indian Ocean is a tropical body of water. Since the areas where they enter and exit have sandy bottoms, they often pose no problems. However, if you are still uneasy, frequently lose your board, and haven’t mastered up-wind body dragging yet, you might want to carry shoes with a Kevlar sole to guard against catching sea urchins in your feet.

Now that we’ve established when you should go on your Kenyan kitesurfing and/or windsurfing adventure, let’s check out some of the best spots this country has to offer!

1. Diani Beach

Diani Beach, located south of Mombasa, is undoubtedly the crown jewel of kitesurfing in Kenya. This tropical paradise boasts stunning white sandy beaches, azure waters, and consistent cross-onshore winds, making it ideal for kitesurfers of all levels. The peak season runs from December to March and July to September when the winds are strong and reliable.

    tag.parentNode.insertBefore(script, tag);
  };
  window.addEventListener ? window.addEventListener("load", loader, false) : window.attachEvent("onload", loader);
})(window, document);

Aside from kitesurfing, Diani Beach offers a wide range of activities such as snorkeling, diving, and exploring nearby Shimba Hills National Reserve. After a day of exhilarating rides, you can unwind at beachside resorts, savoring fresh seafood and immersing yourself in the warm hospitality of the local Swahili culture.

Best Kitesurfing Schools in Diani

Since Diani is a popular destination for kitesurfers, there are a bunch of schools available. All of these schools are also IKO-affiliated and offer high-quality kitesurfing lessons. I’ve taken a bunch of classes myself at some of these schools and can attest that the teaching is very good!

1. Kitemotion Kite School

KiteMotion is a professional kite school based in beautiful Diani Beach. They offer services to both beginners and expert-level riders.

KiteMotion has two locations: The main school is located at Sould Breeze Resort their second branch is located at the Flamboyant Boutique Hotel.

2. Quest Kiteboarding

Quest Kiteboarding, which was founded in 2014, is Kenya’s authorized Cabrinha Kites distributor as well as a professional I.K.O. Kitesurfing & Wing Foil Centre.

The center is located on the lush lawns of the Diani Sea Lodge, and offers coaching and lessons for kitesurfing at the beginner, intermediate, and expert levels.

3. H2O Extreme

H2O Extreme was Kenya’s first water sports facility and offers kitesurfing, windsurfing, SUP, surfing, kayaking, body boarding, and skimboarding.

Diani Beach as a kitesurfing in Kenya destination seems to have gained a lot of popularity over the last few years and now you’ll also find some schools at Galu Beach, which is the lesser populated area at the tail end of Diani Beach. Galu Beach is especially popular for kiters who are looking for a more tranquil and quiet area.

2. Watamu

About a 2.5-hour drive north from Diani Beach, we find another kitesurfing gem: Watamu. This coastal town is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, famed for its pristine coral reefs and diverse marine life. Between June and September, the trade winds known as “Kaskazi” create fantastic conditions for kitesurfing, while the “Kuzi” winds from December to March offer a different yet equally enjoyable experience.

    tag.parentNode.insertBefore(script, tag);
  };
  window.addEventListener ? window.addEventListener("load", loader, false) : window.attachEvent("onload", loader);
})(window, document);

What sets Watamu apart is its eco-friendly approach to tourism. Kitesurfers here have the opportunity to witness turtles nesting, explore the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, and contribute to various conservation projects. It’s a paradise for nature lovers seeking an eco-adventure.

Watamu is also great because you have more flat water areas, which makes for much better teaching, especially for beginners.

Tribe Watersports

Tribe Watersports is a renowned kite- and windsurfing, stand-up paddle- and wake-boarding, and water-skiing school. With over 20 years of expertise and affiliation with the IKO and BKSA, you can count on receiving tuition from the top coaches in the world.

JC Kiteschool

JC Kiteschool is another great kitesurfing center in Watamu, where you’ll be able to receive top-class coaching from IKO-certified instructors from all around the globe.

Kitesufing spots in Watamu you should check out!

1. Mida Creek

There is a broadwater tidal creek that is flanked by vast mangroves and lined with palm trees when entering the Arabuko Sokoke Forest from the sea. Many different bird species, fish, and feeding sea turtles call the 30+ km2 creek home.
The sandbar is located directly in the middle of the creek. Speak to one of the Kite Beach kitesurfing schools and take a look at it; low tide is the optimum time to do this. It’s a wonderful opportunity not to be passed up.

Mida Creek, Watamu

2. Turtle Bay Sandbar

The finest rides here are during the Kaskazi season, which runs from December to March. This is more of a seasonal kitesurfing location. Low tide is the best time to arrive because the water is flat and ideal for kitesurfing lessons or freestylers. Again, year-round cross on-shore winds are present.

3. Silversands

This spot is a little bit of a trip from Watamu and due to being a bit hidden around the coast, Silversands tends to work the best only in Kuzi season, so that’s from June till September when the wind hits this spot just slightly cross off-shore which also delivers some awesome waves. So if you enjoy wave riding, watch out for this one.

4. First Kite Beach (Garoda Beach)

The most well-known kitesurfing location in Watamu is Kite Beach. Along the coast, the beach spans roughly 5 kilometers. Most of the water is flat, however, there are occasional waves and small areas of coral reef. Even during low tides, this system performs admirably. In both the Kaskazi and Kuzi seasons, the wind frequently blows cross-on-shore.

3. Nyali Beach

For those seeking an urban kitesurfing experience, Nyali Beach in Mombasa delivers. With its lively atmosphere and warm waters, Nyali Beach provides a unique blend of adrenaline-pumping kitesurfing sessions and vibrant city life. The peak kitesurfing season falls between June and September when the monsoon winds sweep the coast.

Kitesurfers can revel in the challenges of the sea while taking in the stunning view of Mombasa’s skyline. With a variety of restaurants, bars, and cultural attractions nearby, Nyali Beach offers the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation.

Best Kitesurfing Schools in Nyali Beach

Pepea Kitesurfing School

As one of the most visited kitesurfing schools in Nyali, Pepea is a great option for kitesurfers seeking top-class equipment and lessons in the Mombasa/Nyali area.

4. Kilifi

Nestled between Mombasa and Malindi, Kilifi is a hidden gem known for its picturesque landscapes and tranquil atmosphere. Kitesurfers are drawn to this serene spot, especially during the monsoon season from June to September, when the wind is at its prime.

Kilifi Creek, in particular, offers an idyllic setting for both beginners and advanced kitesurfers. The shallow waters and gentle waves provide an excellent learning ground, while the more experienced can explore freestyle tricks and jumps.

Best Kitesurfing Schools in Kilifi

Salty’s Kitesurfing Village

Saltys is a combination of a beach bar and restaurant which is a great spot for kite surfers since they have stunning tropical waters, quiet lagoons, and fantastic waves out on the reef. The center accommodates various kitesurfing types and also provides kite surfers with reasonably priced lodging.

The shores at Salty’s Kite Village

Kenya frequently comes to mind when one dreams about an African trip. This remarkable country in East Africa is a fascinating tapestry of vast savannahs, untamed wildlife, old traditions, and unimaginably beautiful landscapes.

If you plan your trip wisely, 10 days is plenty to put together the perfect Kenya itinerary. With its promises of amazing safari experiences, varied ecosystems, and close encounters with the “Big Five” (lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffalos), Kenya entices the adventurous tourist.

This itinerary is made to capture the spirit of Kenya, leaving you with unforgettable memories of a place where adventure, nature, and culture come together in perfect harmony. Stops include the fabled Maasai Mara, the pristine beaches of Diani and the ageless charm of Lamu Island.

When is the best time to go to Kenya?

There is no one best time to visit Kenya; it depends on your interests and travel objectives. Outdoor activities, animal watching, and the general tourism experience may be impacted by Kenya’s two main rainy seasons and two dry seasons. Generally speaking, the best times to go are during the two dry seasons:

First dry season (January to March): There is a brief dry time in between the mild rains in November and the heavier rains in April and May. Wildlife viewing is at its best now because the weather is often dry and pleasant. Because the vegetation is less dense in national parks and reserves, it is easier to spot animals there. Since many animals are giving birth at this time, you might be lucky enough to see some newborn animals!

Second dry season (June to October): Locals refer to this as Kenya’s “winter” as it is the long dry season. Because of the good weather, it’s regarded as the best season to go on safari and view the wildlife. In addition, the Maasai Mara hosts the well-known wildebeest migration between July and August, which attracts travelers from all over the world. The weather is often pleasant and the days don’t become too hot, though it may get chilly in the mornings and evenings.

How to get to Kenya

Kenya has two main international airports: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi (JKIA) and Moi International Airport in Mombasa.

Since it offers the finest connections and the most flights, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is where most travelers arrive. Most travelers who arrive at Moi International Airport choose to begin their trip to Kenya with a beach vacation. This is fine, however, based on my personal experiences and the chats I’ve had with other tourists, I’ve found that beach vacations are best taken as a relaxing “cherry on top” after finishing a thorough safari excursion.

10 days in Kenya Itinerary

There are of course many variations as to how to design your 10 days in Kenya. When designing itineraries I’m honestly not a big fan of trying to cover as many places as possible in a very short amount of time. It makes for a more “hectic” trip whereby you aren’t really able to enjoy the place you are in because the next agenda item is already creeping up on you.

The “Bush and Beach” approach is always a good idea because you get the best of what Kenya has to offer: A beautiful safari experience and a relaxing beach holiday. Here’s how I would design my 10-day Kenya itinerary:

<polyline points="9 11 12 14 22 4"/>

Summary

Day 1: Arrive in Nairobi
Day 2-4: Masai Mara
Day 5-7: Diani
Day 8-9: Lamu
Day 10: Nairobi

Day 1: Nairobi

I always tell first-time visitors to put aside 1-2 days to explore Nairobi as this city has a lot to offer! However, I’d recommend this only if your trip length is at least 2 weeks. Depending on the time of day you arrive, some light exploring might still be possible. Check out my guide on how you can discover Nairobi in one day.

Where to stay

Angama Mara

Cottars 1920s Camp

Salas Camp

Day 2-4: Masai Mara

The next item on the list is likely the trip’s high point in terms of animal viewing.

Visiting the renowned Masai Mara National Park is one of the most spectacular things to do in Kenya because of its wide variety of animals, gorgeous landscapes, and cultural significance.

The Masai Mara is well renowned for hosting the famed Great Migration as well as having a large diversity of species. During the yearly Great Migration, which is a breathtaking spectacle, millions of wildebeests, zebras, and other animals travel the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of new grazing areas. On game drives through the national park, you get a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness one of the most astounding natural phenomena in the entire world.

Where to Stay

There are a lot of options to stay in during your time in the Mara. If you are looking for the best value for money, have a look at my post below which outlines all the best lodges where you really get your money’s worth!

Read more: The Best Value-for-Money Lodges in the Masai Mara

If you don’t mind spending a little bit more and want to experience true luxury, have a look at the camps below:

Angama Mara

Cottars 1920s Camp

Salas Camp

Day 5-7: Diani Beach

You can’t have 2 weeks in Kenya without some beach time. After a busy week of wildlife viewing at the Mara and Tsavo, I always recommend visitors set aside a couple of days for a relaxing time at the beach.

Diani Beach has won various awards in the last couple of years for being the best beach destination in Africa. Due to its pristine beach and abundant marine life, it serves as both a getaway and a hotspot for water activities and a must-do stop during your 10 day Kenya itinerary. This includes snorkeling, scuba diving, kite surfing, and deep-sea fishing. I’ve listed below a few recommendations for how you can best spend your time in Diani.

Things to do in Diani Beach

Kitesurfing: Diani Beach is one of the best locations in Kenya for kitesurfing.
Day 8-9: Lamu Island

Lamu is a lovely island off the coast of Kenya where ancient traditions and stunning nature combine to create an exceptional vacation destination. Lamu is a place where time seems to have stopped in the midst of stunning natural scenery. The lengthy Swahili cultural past is preserved there.

This East African treasure, with its beautiful beaches, magnificent architecture, and courteous hospitality, is for anyone looking for a real and immersive Swahili experience.

Within this 10-day Kenya itinerary, Lamu should definitely be included.

Things to do in Lamu

I wrote a comprehensive blog post on all the things you can do in Lamu, however, if you are in a hurry, I’ve listed the main highlights below:

Lamu Museum: One thing I’d definitely recommend is to visit the Lamu Museum. The museum houses a collection of the island’s extensive history, cultural legacy, and maritime customs. It’s set in a gorgeously restored Swahili structure that displays the unique architectural design of the island.

Traditional Dhow Ride: Dhow rides across the Lamu archipelago are another must-do activity while in Lamu. Naturally, these wonderful rides are provided by a variety of tour companies. You’ll set sail early in the morning and spend a few hours on a dhow admiring all that Lamu has to offer in terms of beauty. Fresh seafood will also be prepared by the crew members of the boat, and it is fantastic! Anyone visiting Lamu should engage in this activity.

Visit the Lamu Cultural Festival: The Lamu Cultural Festival is an annual event celebrated on Lamu Island in Kenya. The festival offers a unique opportunity to experience the rich cultural heritage of the Swahili people and the island’s unique way of life.

Where to Stay

The Majilis

Kizingo

Lamu House Hotel

Forodhani House

Day 10: Nairobi and flight back home

The itinerary for the 10-day trip to Kenya ends here. Since Jomo Kenyatta Airport has the best connections for international flights, it’s usually more practical to return to Nairobi.

Make sure to depart Lamu on the morning flight if your return journey is scheduled for a late night. As domestic flights can occasionally be unpredictable, including sudden delays, plan ahead and allow ample time between your trip from Lamu to Nairobi and your return flight.

Practical info

How do I get my Kenyan visa?

In order to enter Kenya for tourism-related purposes, you must get an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). A Kenya Electronic Travel Visa can be obtained by applicants by completing a simple online eVisa application.

Kenya’s ETA is valid for 30 or 90 days, based on the kind of application. Applicants may acquire an approved Kenya ETA in two or three days. After the date of admission, passports must be valid for at least six months. Please check the list of countries eligible for Kenya ETA before submitting an application.

Is Kenya Safe?

I have lived in Kenya for a number of years and I consider it to be a very safe country. Regarding safety, I don’t think there is anything to be concerned about when going on safari. The tour companies, their drivers, and their guards are all highly skilled and knowledgeable about the proper ways to observe wildlife. Consequently, it’s wise to pay attention to their recommendations on proper behavior whether on a safari or when interacting with wildlife.

Kenya does have a fair share of crime, especially in bigger cities. Little robberies like pickpocketing and bag snatching may occur in busy places like bus stations and markets.
However, if you have a packed itinerary, it’s usually advised to spend 1-2 days in Nairobi before heading over to your safari in one of Kenya’s amazing safari destinations! Therefore, I’ve put together a small 1-day itinerary that can help you make the most out of your 1-day layover!

The unique wildlife preserve known as Nairobi National Park is also located, you guessed it, in Nairobi! Its distinctiveness is further enhanced by the fact that it is the only national park in the world to be situated inside the city limits!
Despite being quite close to the bustling city, Nairobi National Park is home to a variety of animals, including many classic African species. There, one can witness lions, cheetahs, giraffes, buffalo, rhinoceroses, and many more animals.

The Giraffe Centre, a truly exceptional location that combines conservation, education, and up-close encounters with wildlife, is situated Karen.

The concentration on the Rothschild’s giraffe, a critically endangered species that previously neared extinction, is what distinguishes this centre as being particularly unique. The African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW) and the Kenya Wildlife Service founded the centre with the intention of conserving and protecting these giraffes.

Local organizations and businesses are committed to protecting the delicate coastal ecosystem, including coral reefs and nesting sites for endangered sea turtles.
Scuba Diving

Diani also calls home to a lot of coral reefs, which makes it the perfect destination for scuba diving. If you are an avid scuba diver then you’ll feel right at home, and if you are a first-timer, it is also the perfect place to learn scuba diving. I actually obtained my PADI open-water diving license at a diving school in Diani and couldn’t have felt more comfortable!

What is the Lamu Archipelago?

The charming island of Lamu, which is located off the coast of Kenya, is a place where history is spoken through its winding lanes and where time seems to have stopped.

Lamu is a living example of the intricate history of East Africa with its well-preserved Swahili architecture, magnificent beaches, and thriving cultural heritage. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll have the opportunity tour the ancient stone buildings with finely carved doors and windows that make up Lamu’s old town.

Lamu is a mesmerizing location that invites you to travel back in time and savor the spirit of a bygone era. Whether you’re drawn to it because of its yearly Lamu Cultural Festival, its delectable Swahili cuisine, or the peaceful sound of lapping waves along its coasts. Because of this, it makes it one of the most visited beach destinations in Kenya.

Read more: The Best Things To Do In Lamu

What is the Lamu Cultural Festival and what does it entail?

Every year, the Lamu Cultural Festival takes place on Lamu Island. This celebration honors the rich cultural legacy and customs of the long-established Swahili population in this area. I’ve listed below 7 reasons why the Lamu Cultural Festival is so unique and why you definitely need to add it to your bucket list when visiting Kenya!

1. Experience Traditional Dhow Races

Traditional dhow races in Lamu are a beloved and enthralling aspect of the island’s cultural history. These races honor the historical significance of dhows in Lamu’s maritime customs and trading history.

As the races go, local sailors and fisherman demonstrate their prowess and ability to work together by helming these recognizable wooden sailing vessels. The colorful sails of dhows, blow in the wind as they smoothly cross the water, providing an amazing spectacle.

In order to accommodate diverse types and sizes of dhows and guarantee widespread participation, the competition includes a variety of categories, from short-distance sprints to lengthy endurance races.

The dhows, which are decked out in vivid colors and traditional patterns, give the occasion a festive feel and bring together large crowds of people. Fans come out to support their preferred dhows and crews, making it an amazing atmosphere to be a part of.

2. Check out all the authentic swahili Arts & crafts exhibitions

During the festival, local artisans and craftsmen display a range of handcrafted products. These include delicate woodwork, jewelry, textiles, and more, to demonstrate their expertise. You’ll have the opportunity to support local artists by purchasing one-of-a-kind souvenirs.

3. Experience Traditional Swahili Music and Dance

During the Lamu Cultural Festival you can take in performances of traditional Swahili music and dance. This is an essential component of the community’s culture. In these performances, traditional instruments and compelling rhythms are frequently used.

4. Fill your belly with delicious swahili food

The festival is a wonderful opportunity to try some delectable street food and Swahili delicacies. The flavors of traditional Swahili food, such as biryani, samosas, and freshly caught seafood are second to none!

5. Witness amazing Cultural Parades

The parade participants wear traditional Swahili garb, which frequently consists of elaborately crafted clothing, headgear, and accessories. These clothes are a reflection of the Lamu Archipelago’s rich cultural heritage.

Lively music and traditional Swahili dance performances are played during the parades. A lively and rhythmic environment is produced by musicians using regional instruments like drums, flutes, and stringed instruments.

The parades consist of colorful processions that wind their way through the narrow, stone-paved streets of Lamu Old Town. The participants, often representing different communities and cultural groups, march together, displaying their unique customs and traditions.

A cheerful and happy environment is created by the Lamu Cultural Parades. Streets are lined with spectators who queue to witness the vibrant processions, dance to the music, and engage with the participants.

6. Watch Donkey Races

The donkey races are a lighthearted competition where locals and visitors come together to cheer for their favorite donkey and jockey. The races usually take place on a designated track or path. Participants decorate the donkeys with colorful attire and accessories, creating a festive atmosphere. It’s not only a fun spectacle but also a way for the community to showcase their donkeys’ agility and speed.

Spectators gather along the racecourse to watch the races, and there’s usually plenty of laughter and excitement as the donkeys dash to the finish line. The races often include different categories, such as short-distance sprints and longer endurance races.

7. Take part in Cultural workshops and talks on Swahili Culture

The Lamu Cultural Workshops are an essential component of the annual Lamu Cultural Festival, providing visitors with an engaging and instructive experience. These classes offer a practical chance to explore the island’s rich cultural legacy.

You can participate in a variety of traditional crafts and activities under the direction of local artists and specialists who have received their knowledge from earlier generations.

These programs provide insight into the island’s artisanal traditions. Whether it’s studying the craft of traditional basket weaving, mastering the nuances of wood carving, or discovering the flavors of real Swahili cuisine through cooking sessions.

Additionally, they frequently incorporate discussions and presentations about Lamu’s history, traditions, and cultural practices to contextualize the hands-on learning.

Where to stay during the festival

Peponi Hotel Lamu: The iconic Peponi Hotel, a family-run establishment with a prime beachside setting, is situated in Shela Village. It’s the ideal blend of island charm and elegance.

The Majlis Resort: Situated on Manda Island, The Majlis Resort offers a luxurious and tranquil escape. With stunning views of the Indian Ocean, spacious rooms, and various water-based activities, it’s a top choice for a relaxing getaway.

Kizingo: It is situated on the isolated western shore of Lamu Island, and provides a private and dreamy beachfront experience. The large bandas (thatched cottages) offer a comfortable and peaceful getaway.

Lamu House Hotel: This boutique hotel in Lamu Old Town boasts beautifully designed rooms, an inviting pool, and a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of the town. It offers an authentic Lamu experience.

Forodhani House: Forodhani House offers comfortable accommodations with a historic feel. Its location provides easy access to the town’s attractions. It’s another excellent option in Lamu Old Town.

These are some of my favorite places in Lamu. However, you can also have a look at Airbnb as there are a lot of wonderful properties listed for all price ranges.

How to get to Lamu

Nairobi to Mombasa (by Air or Road):

By Air: Taking a domestic flight from Nairobi Wilson Airport to Lamu Airport is the quickest option. This route is serviced by a number of airlines, and flights last one to one and a half hours.

By Road: Another option is to drive or take a long-distance bus from Nairobi to Mombasa, which will take you 8 to 10 hours.

Mombasa to Lamu (by Air or Bus):

By Air: You can fly domestically from Mombasa to Lamu Airport. It takes around an hour to complete the flight. There are numerous airlines that fly this route. You’ll need to take a quick boat journey across the canal from Lamu Airport to the Island, which lies close by.

By Bus and Boat: Alternatively, you can take a bus or taxi from Mombasa to the coastal town of Mokowe, which is the gateway to Lamu Island. The journey takes around 6-8 hours. From Mokowe, you can catch a boat (usually a dhow) to Lamu Town on Lamu Island. The boat ride is a scenic and traditional way to arrive on the island.

Tip: As someone who has done the trip multiple times, going by air is by far the most convenient and stress-free option. I’d therefore highly recommend paying a little more and getting a domestc flight ticket – it’s definitely worth the extra cost!

Conclusion

The Lamu Cultural Festival is a rich tapestry of history, customs, and community, not just a one-time occasion. It’s a celebration where the past and present joyfully embrace, providing a window into Lamu’s soul.

Visitors can fully immerse themselves in the island’s rich heritage through the vibrant parades, traditional dhow races, cultural seminars, and friendly hospitality of the inhabitants. During this time, Swahili music fills the air, dancing, and laughter fill the streets, and the cheers of onlookers fill the shores of Lamu.

Planning your honeymoon safari in Kenya

The best time to visit Kenya

Depending on your interests and travel goals, there is no one ideal time to visit Kenya. Kenya has two main rainy seasons and two dry seasons that may affect outdoor activities and wildlife viewing. Generally speaking, the two dry seasons are the ideal times to visit.

The first dry season is between January and March. This is the best time to see wildlife because the weather is usually dry and nice. In national parks and reserves, animals are easier to see because of the sparser foliage. It’s a period when a lot of animals give birth, so you might be fortunate enough to view some babies!

The second dry season is between June and October. It’s thought to be the greatest time of year to go on safari and see the animals because of the pleasant weather. Furthermore, between July and August, the Maasai Mara is the site of the world-famous wildebeest migration, drawing tourists from all over the globe. The days don’t get overly hot and the weather is generally pleasant, however, it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings.

How to get to Kenya

Kenya has two main international airports: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi (JKIA) and Moi International Airport in Mombasa. JKIA has more connections to airports all around the world.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Kenya provides a wide range of amazing honeymoon locations to suit the aspirations of each and every couple. Kenya offers a chance for romance, adventure, and cultural immersion.

Furthermore, while Lake Nakuru displays the spectacular beauty of nature and the various fauna that Kenya is known for, Lamu Island encourages you to travel back in time and enjoy its distinct heritage. While Mount Kenya National Park offers an exciting alpine adventure, the environmentally conscious Chale Island offers a private getaway.

Getting across Kenya’s varied landscapes, busy towns, and isolated wildlife reserves is essential to discovering the country’s colourful tapestry. Travelling across this fascinating nation requires familiarity with its fairly simple yet unique transportation system. With this all-inclusive guide, we reveal the various routes you may take across Kenya. From the busy city of Nairobi to the expansive savannas of the Maasai Mara. Below you’ll find a small transport guide which provides an overview of the various modes of transportation available to you during your stay in Kenya.

Matatus and Buses

Kenya’s famous matatus, or minibuses, are a symbol of the nation’s urban transportation system. Brightly painted with vibrant artwork, these cars weave through urban streets, providing a vital link for both commuters and tourists.

One of the larger Matatu buses

Matatus, which connect different neighbourhoods and destinations with their regular routes, provide an economical and effective way to go around Nairobi and neighbouring towns. Their owners’ personalities are reflected in their varied designs, and the loud music and vibrant interior design provide an immersive cultural experience in addition to simple transportation.

Standard Matatu Bus

Even though they have a reputation for driving quickly and occasionally erratically, minibuses are still an essential feature of Kenya’s urban environment, representing both practicality and the vibrant energy of the country’s transport network.

Tuk Tuks

The three-wheeled motorised marvels known as tuk-tuks move with an agility that epitomises urban convenience through Kenya’s busy streets. These little cars are often seen in the outer parts of cities and smaller towns, and they provide a quick and reasonably priced way to get around, especially for short trips.

Tuk Tuk at the Kenyan coast

Tuk-tuks give the cityscape a lively flair with their unique designs and brilliant colours. They can easily manoeuvre through traffic thanks to their agility, giving passengers a comfortable and thrilling ride.

Tuk Tuk in Mombasa town

Despite their small size, they have a big impact on local transport since they provide tourists and locals with a fun and easy way to get around Kenya’s bustling streets.

Motorcycles (Boda Bodas)
