“This is what I mean when the island transports you back in time. This predominantly Muslim island has around 50,000 people and 6,000 donkeys. You can’t walk around the old town without sharing the road with donkeys (& their 💩).⠀

If you’ve heard of Zanzibar, I’d say Lamu is the smaller, quieter, and more raw version of it. You won’t find hoards of travelers… just yet. ⠀
⠀
Walking these tiny, narrow streets, you’ll be greeted with warm smiles and inquisitive looks. You’ll hear Mambo to which you can reply Poa as their local greeting. Five times a day, you’ll hear the Adhaan or call to prayer throughout the island. ⠀
⠀
Simply walking through the island and interacting with the locals is the best. Once you hit the fort, grab a seat and people watch. Going shopping for the artwork, furniture, and jewelry is a good idea. Stop for some seafood like a Red Snapper or load up on some carbs with chapatis, biryani, or pilau. If you’re looking for a snack, maybe samosas will do.⠀

If you’re wondering why I listed Indian food it’s because there’s a huge influence of Indian cuisine on the coast and throughout the rest of Kenya.⠀

“A morning to remember. Riding out the bumps that were carved into the dusty trails of @mugieconservancy from the tyres before us an seasonal rains, we drove into the sunrise. A gentle warm glow illuminated the horizon, seeping through the long sun-bleached grasses before us.

Jacob, our guide, received a call and immediately we made a 180, back to the other side of the conservancy. A cheetah siting. We had to travel around 15km to make it, but when we arrived, Zuri was still there. Lazing in the early morning light, his spots contrasted against the dried earth of the termite mound he laid on.

The next hour was ours. Just Otis, me, our guide Jacob, and Zuri. That’s the really special thing about Mugie Conservancy. You’re almost always the only ones there.”

Never seen so many animals in their natural habitat and some of them really very close!🦓🦒🐘
🐾 Safaris aren’t restricted to the Big 5: there are tons of other wildlife.
Despite loving more active experiences, game drives brought me in the middle of the actions: hyenas looking for a hunt, lions cuddling baby lions, hippos yawning and chilling in the water, wildebeest migrating, chimpanzees jumping from one tree to the other.
